App of the Week: Canva

While I love working with shapes, patterns and colours — I am not a designer. This app lets me fake it.

I started using Canva¬†when it was recommended to me by a classmate in a social media class I took last year. This was before the app came out, so everything I did was online then and I was only able to access my work by emailing myself a copy. But I could never work on anything using my smart phone…until recently, that is.

Canva is a startup from Australia with big dreams. When major brands and media — as well as influencer and evangelist Guy Kawasaki — took notice, Canva only got bigger and better.

Here are some of the things Canva can do — right from your phone!

Create stunning Instagram posts:

Create professional work presentations:

Create cute custom birthday cards:

You can start from scratch, or use one of Canva’s many templates. There are a myriad of styles, photos, fonts and illustrations (some free, some $) you can use and customize based on your unique design needs.

There’s even basic photo editing built right into the app (cropping & filters). Best of all — Canva has plenty of how-to’s on their website and tutorials on YouTube if you get stuck.

For those looking for more from Canva — try Canva for Work. You can upload all of your team’s design assets, templates and fonts/colours so you can start your designs with your brand in mind, at all times.

Do you already use Canva? If not, would you? Let me know!
